Amy Starecheski, oral historian, former squatter, and author of the recent book, Ours to Lose: When Squatters Become Homeowners in New York City, gathered a group who have been documenting the squatting movement from multiple perspectives, from firsthand experience to generational remove. Below, Amy guides us through some of the documents they have gathered and created: a graphic novel, a sketchbook with instructions for DIY electrical wiring, interviews, and installations... The High Line is rapidly becoming not just a popular tourist site, but a veritable avenue of major—and glitzy—architectural projects. Studio Gang has announced that they will join the roster of big-name architects with buildings lining the pedestrianized train tracks. The firm has released the first images of the Solar Carve Tower, a 166,750 square foot tower commissioned by 40-56 Tenth Ave Joint Ventures. The Solar Carve Tower gets its name from the design strategy responsible for its angular form. In short, the edifice gets its shape from combining parameters imposed by its allowable envelope with angles derived from solar paths, as well as views of the nearby Hudson. “In addition to producing a faceted, gem-like facade, this integrated response allows the building to benefit the important public green space of the High Line—privileging light, fresh air, and river views to the public park—while also becoming a new iconic silhouette on the New York skyline,” the studio writes

The notion of spending time at a subway stop or other major transit center for pleasure may strike you as odd, but many cities and transportation companies are investing heavily in building up this part of their infrastructure to create desirable public spaces (it adds a whole new dimension to "mixed-use"). In this feature by Kim Slowey for Construction Dive , the shift in investment is explored:  Architecture firm HOK designed the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodel Center (ARTIC) in California, a 21st century take on the massive transit halls of the past. Finished in 2014, using steel and ethylene tetrafluoroethylene "pillows," designers created a hangar-like, light-filled area that makes room for dining and shopping, as well as for additional future commercial development. Although it's not shocking that companies like Gensler have automated on/off sensors in their lighting grid to save energy when no one's in the office, it's slightly less comforting to realize that many companies are now using sensors to monitor when employees are at their desks, if they're talking with their fellow co-workers, and how long they're in the bathroom. (Makes one harken for the days when workers were judged by what they actually produced, as opposed to their process of production.) As  Marketplace  reports, one of the new privacy-free devices is called "Humanyze":  They’re in a badge you wear around [your] neck, kind of like an ID badge. And they measure this thing called “latency” to see how often people are interacting with their co-workers. Which, to me, sounds like a little bit much. But they claim the data is anonymized, and they don’t record exactly what you’re saying, or at least they don’t share that with your employer.... The Bosto

Yes I really suck at editing but OMG people, Maren 's house is SOOOOO gorgeous! I am so sad she lives in Norway because I totally want to hang out at her place and listen to her make music and play with her cat and dog. Anyway, I will just have to make do with her Instagram feed . But at least I have a little (ok not that little) piece of her in my home. Check it out at the end of this post! Maren and Maria, another Norwegian Instagram lovely @nordic_by_maag  host the hashtag #darksideshow and back in mid-December they chose me as their weekly winner and OMG Maren sent my a massive canvas printed with one of her paintings all the way from Norway! it arrived a couple of weeks ago and husband and I framed it and hung it over the weekend. It is just what my bedroom was missing. The empty wall over my bed was starting to drive me crazy so this was the perfect spot. I love it Maren!!
