Office Wild

Resim
Or perhaps that should be Office Wilde, Oscar Wilde. It certainly has drama and flair. A touch OTT from its patterned cow hide rug and statement brass desk to the flamboyant Timorous Beasties wallpaper. Just can't see Wilde 's famous last words "Either this wallpaper has to go or I do" being muttered in this room. Taking its inspiration from the Cult of Beauty and the Aesthetic movement "The Pavonia Room” is by San Francisco based Geoffrey De Sousa Interior Design . , midcenturyjo , via desire to inspire http://ift.tt/2fGSivx

New-Territories projects forward in its "retrospective" at the FRAC Centre in Val de Loire, France

Resim
“The architect is someone who tries to bring out an aesthetic strategy from within the complexities of a society in order to reveal its heartbeat, even if contradictory,” writes New-Territories , the constantly-mutating Bangkok-based, French-born architecture studio, previously known as R&Sie and elsewhere as M4 (MindMachineMakingMyths). “The architect shoulders the unshared risk of putting out an unprecedented scenario, thus generating a particular and unique configuration. Wearing neither the halo of a Don Quixote nor the mantle of romanticism, this attitude only emerges after sticking his neck all the way out. You have to give him credit for that.” Deferring the authorial power assumed by architects stands as a central concern for New-Territories, which is integrally associated with the architect François Roche (despite his best efforts). Founded in 1993, New-Territories is officially “headed” by the “Avatar”, a digitally-generated androgynous figure, who tethers together a

BIG + BARCODE to design terraced “Sluishuis” complex in Amsterdam

Resim
BIG has another terraced building in the works. This time around, the practice led a team with Rotterdam-based BARCODE Architects to design the competition-winning scheme for “Sluishuis”, a new 46,000 m2 mixed-use development proposed for IJburg Lake at the edge of Amsterdam.  The residential complex will be a “building inside the port, with a port inside the building,” Bjarke Ingels says. Showing off different silhouettes at various vantage points, the building will also include 380 apartments, about 4,000 m2 of commercial and public areas, 240 underground parking spaces, and a water-quality program that the architects say will provide enough room for up to 30 houseboats.  Toward the water, the building block lifts up to create a large opening that allows water from the IJ Lake to flow into the central courtyard as well as bring sunlight and views into the inner apartments of the building. The block then cascades downward and reveals more of itself toward the city. A public

Act React Adapt

Resim
Architecture is a machine or architecture is perceived as an output of a machine. Both are justified in their respective ways. The entity judging this is the observer who uses or passes by this. The relationship of the observer and the built has a deep influence on the designer who conceives the architecture. Stephen Gage’s in his paper ‘The Wonder of Trivial Machine’ discusses the parameters which talk about its different aspects, where he describes a simple way of making a non-trivial machine which can be a time-based media especially dynamic sculptures and performative art. The “Fun Palace “by Joan and Cedric Price is one of the most prominent examples of a dynamic architecture which is time based.  The Fun palace was conceived as a ‘Laboratory of Fun’ where people could learn new trade, handle tools or learn facility for dancing and creative arts.  The beauty of the building was that it adapted to all the changes in the function. As the structure of the building was in a transit

What Ben Carson's federal inexperience means for HUD

Resim
If Carson wants to dramatically change the nature of HUD, all he needs to do is nothing — a course of action he seems temperamentally inclined to accept. Under Carson, HUD could stop enforcement of that "socialist" Fair Housing Act. It could stop prodding local governments to increase access to homes. It could look the other way when local ordinances sequester government-mandated affordable housing away from those with enough pull to say "not in my backyard." Arthouse

Resim
Arthouse is our first built project in the typology of terraced houses. The compact spatial layout of the house, made of several blocks, was largely determined by the small area of the plot and the surrounding urban context. The inner structure of each unit resembles an open “bookcase”, where each living process occupies its own level, all of them being interconnected by means of an open staircase. Besides, each block has its own backyard, which can be accessed from the kitchen-dining room. , Architizer Editors, read more Architizer http://ift.tt/2gH3UhP

prairieHouse Reclaims Gas Sation Infrastructure

Resim
A lush vision of the American prairie has provided a century of architectural inspiration–wide open views, waving grasses, ribbons of roadways, and boundless optimism. But as aquifers dry and desertification advances, the prairie and its local landmarks begin to sponsor another reality. The prairieHouse by Specht Architects   is designed to work in this new environment, as it adapts the ubiquitous infrastructure of the oil industry to the needs of a very different future. Where classic “lofts” are created from abandoned factory buildings, the prairieHouse imagines reuse of abandoned or outmoded gas stations, with a filling station canopy providing the bones and broad shading eaves of this new form of compact living. A new steel chassis is attached to the station’s existing columns, allowing the house’s living spaces to be suspended protectively beneath the roof, while wraparound clerestory windows allow for a bright interior, avoiding direct solar gain. “The Other Architect” Exhibition Examines How Architects Design Without Building

Resim
“For as long as architecture has been reduced to a service to society or an ‘industry’ whose ultimate goal is only to build, there have been others who imagine it instead as a field of intellectual research: energetic, critical, radical,” states Giovanna Borasi in her essay “Another Way of Building Architecture.” , Joanna Kloppenburg, read more Architizer http://ift.tt/2gGRZAA

Santa Monica's 'impossibly green' building dreams: the challenging path to Living Building certification

Resim
On a small and skinny lot wedged behind its historic city hall, Santa Monica is trying to accomplish something that has never been done before in California. By 2020, the city hopes to construct a 50,000-square-foot city services building that will meet the requirements of the International Living Future Institute’s “Living Building Challenge” — the most stringent environmental building standard in the world. "Should the city succeed it will prove that net-zero water is possible in our arid climate, even in a drought — and that if we’re serious about staving off the effects of drought and climate change, we should settle for no less. It will also familiarize code officials with new innovations, making it easier for developers to build sustainably." Trump nominates Elaine Chao for Secretary of Transportation

Resim
Mr. Trump...has said that infrastructure redevelopment will be a priority of his first 100 days in office. And Ms. Chao has experience — politically and personally — in navigating the competing centers of power in the capital...But now that she is in line for a prominent position in Mr. Trump’s cabinet, it is her own ties to business that are likely to come under scrutiny. As labor secretary, she faced criticism that her department favored business and was lax on enforcement and worker safety. Sophie Brown Christmas (and other) styling

Resim
It takes alot for me to get excited about Christmas decor (maybe because I am bitter that I can't do much with all these damn cats around to destroy everything), but when I stumbled upon the portfolio of London based stylist/designer Sophie Brown , it took about 5 milliseconds. OMG! OMG! OMG! These first 3 photos in particular are soooo magical. And if you aren't into holiday decor I threw in some regular stuff because it's pretty fabulous too.  Photos: James Merrell, Jonathan West, Polly Wreford, Damien Russell, Simon Bevan, Kristin Perers, Paul Massey, Beth Evans,  , KiM , via desire to inspire http://ift.tt/2fRPNoB
