HofmanDujardin and Schipper Bosch transform brutalist factory hall into bustling office building

Resim
A former nylon factory has been transformed into a dynamic office space. Designed by HofmanDujardin and Schipper Bosch , this Netherlands-based structure provides an expansive work experience for its tenants, playing off of the stark yet placid qualities of concrete throughout. Contrasting the grey material is the new timber staircase that connects the space's ground and basement levels. Additional floors have been introduced and hang on an elaborate structural frame, eliciting a sense of lightness and openness throughout the office.  The ground floor features multiple meeting rooms and a restaurant while the upper levels contain workstations. Natural light washes the entire interior, providing those working less exposure to artificial illumination during the day. How is climate change affected by the products you specify?

Resim
Interior designers and architects are often left out of the embodied carbon conversation, but the impact and opportunity with interior materials is huge–especially when you account for cyclical renovations over the building’s life. There are many ways to reduce the carbon footprint of a TI project, but doing that requires a shift in mindset. This is the focus of an upcoming panel, the first of Parade's month+ long series of panels addressing critical issues for architects and designers, entitled "How Your Specs Can Solve the Climate Crisis." The Interface -sponsored event will be moderated by Nadav Malin, President at BuildingGreen , with panelists Jennifer Chen, Interiors Associate at LMN , and Brent Ehrlich, Products & Materials Specialist at BuildingGreen . The virtual panel will take place via Zoom next next Tuesday, October 5th, from 1-2pm EST.  Click here for more info and to RSVP . Space will be limited so sign up soon to book you spot.  About Parade

Studio Cooke John selected for 7th Annual Flatiron Public Plaza Design

Resim
The Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership and Van Alen Institute today announced their selection for the seventh annual Flatiron Public Plaza Design Installation:  Point of Action  by Studio Cooke John , a multidisciplinary design studio with a broad range of expertise.  Point of Action will be on view November 23, 2020 - January 1, 2021 in the Flatiron Public Plazas. The installation "invites New Yorkers and visitors to contemplate the experience of seeing one another — and being seen."  Within the Flatiron Public Plazas, six-foot circles create nine "spotlights," each holding its own vertical metal frame. Ropes create a kind of envelope at the sides of the frame. The open sides of the assemblies allow visitors to step into the spotlight and connect with other "viewers" throughout the plaza. "We are at a threshold during this pandemic. Now that our eyes have been opened to realities that have been with us all along, how do we move forward? My

How to use reading to find mentorship when you have no job

Resim
Working in an organization with more experienced architects is crucial to one's professional development. But, in this current job market, amid the pandemic, it has been difficult for many to land a promising appointment. And while the searching continues, professional growth can feel stunted. Without a mentor to teach, where does one turn for guidance? How can the jobless candidate continue on a path of growth despite this misfortunate dilemma?  There are many ways to tackle downtime during this season. Reading biographies is one way to learn a lifetime worth of lessons. In this way, your mentors become endless and fully accessible. Obviously, this doesn't replace the one on one interaction with an actual human being. As an aspiring architect, there is much to be embraced from the biographies of creative individuals, their mistakes and failures, how they overcame them, and how you can take those lessons and apply them to your journey. Here are three recommendation that I t

New research study indicates chitin could be a suitable building material for Mars habitation

Resim
A study conducted by Javier Fernandez and colleagues  from Singapore University of Technology and Design provides research that the bioinspired material, chitin, would be a viable building material for Mars inhabitation and tool production.  Fernandez shares with  Universe Today  that by reverse-engineering chitin production and combining it with an analog of Martian soil, new chitinous material was created. This material called biolith has presented itself to be highly useful in creating rigid structures using minimal energy output. “The technology was originally developed to create circular ecosystems in urban environments, but due to its efficiency, it is also the most efficient and scalable method to produce materials in a closed artificial ecosystem in the extremely scarce environment of a lifeless planet or satellite,” explains Fernandez. Explore Ricardo Bofill’s Stunning “La Muralla Roja” Through the Lens of Sebastian Weiss

Resim
Architects: Showcase your next project through Architizer and sign up for our inspirational newsletter . Architect Ricardo Bofill turned 80 years old in December 2019. This major cause for celebration gave architectural photographer Sebastian Weiss the impetus to travel to one of Bofill’s most well known and distinctive buildings, “La Muralla Roja” in Calp, Spain. Weiss describes the housing complex as “a place on the border to the surreal,” and his abstract photographs bring this kaleidoscopic project to life in all its colorful glory. La Muralla Roja, Spanish for ‘The Red Wall,’ was inspired by the bold colors and distinctive vernacular of the Mediterranean region, referencing the architectural language of alcazabas (old forts or medinas). The bold colors were chosen by Bofill to strike a contrast with the natural surroundings, while simultaneously sitting in harmony with its context. “The strict geometry and the juxtaposition of ocher, red to pink, blue and the turqu
