Architecture grad students Luis Alvarez, Wai Kan Chan, and Di Wang from McGill University had the winning proposal for the “Growing our Community” student design competition, which is part of Canada's 150th anniversary celebration. The  Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) and  Just Food  invited students across Canada to propose ideas for an outdoor pavilion at the Just Food farm's new community garden in Ottawa. The winning proposal, “Through the Rye”, competed against 50 other entries and then advanced to become one of five finalists, which went up for a public vote. Through the Rye racked up 5,000 votes. As City—Michael Heizer’s vast Land Art installation in the Nevada desert—nears completion, the fate of the federally protected land surrounding it could soon be decided. Ryan Zinke, the US Interior Secretary, visited the state on Sunday, 30 July, as part of a review of 27 national monuments ordered by President Donald Trump, which could result in some of these lands being reopened to development. "A number of museums banded together to call for the site’s preservation," The Art Newspaper explains the background of City 's current surroundings ( previously also on Archinect ), "and in 2015, Obama created the Basin and Range National Monument, which covers 704,000 acres in southern Nevada’s Lincoln and Nye counties, including the land surrounding City and several Native American rock art sites. After three years of planning and design, the College of Arts and Architecture has launched a public, searchable photo archive of images from within the college. The online photo archive, Arts and Architecture Resource Collaborative (AARC), is the product of a partnership among the College of Arts and Architecture Alumni and Communications Office, the Visual Resources Centre (VRC), and Arts and Architecture Information Technology (AAIT). " AARC features images provided by multiple photographers with search criteria customized for the college, including department names, keywords, proper names and dates. Through a series of focus groups with key users and uploaders, the AARC team built a robust metadata structure, providing easy access and user-friendly instructions for searching and uploading images." Fire extinguishers are rarely a detail that excites architects and designers — if they are even factored into the design process. As afterthoughts, they are clunky and disrupt the smooth lines and exciting details of spatial design. As forethoughts, their shape often requires deeper wall cavities that are expensive, both in materials and the usable square footage they require. Kevin Kozlowski, who spent 20 years as a project manager for one of the largest contractors in the U.S., noticed the issue of fire-extinguisher placement was causing construction problems and occupancy issues. “I was constantly seeing blueprints where architects added notes for a flush extinguisher cabinet on a standard-depth wall — but a standard fire extinguisher cannot fit into a standard-depth wall,” Kozlowski recalls. Contributed by Simon Pocock : Thomas Hut was built in 1930 thanks to the combined efforts of the founding members of the Ski Club of South Africa – one of whom was Eddie Pells – and the Worcester Section of the MCSA, who realised that the slopes of the Fonteintjiesberg were good for skiing after a heavy snowfall. The hut is named after McL Thomas, who was chairman of the Worcester Section at the time and who first loaned the funds to build the hut, and then waived repayment. Building the hut was quite a task. A road to Brandwacht had to be built first, which was jointly funded by the MCSA and the Worcester municipality. Stone and sand was readily available, but additional building materials, such as roofing and planks weighing 3.5 tons, had to be transported to the site.
