Urban Gardening Changing Vietnam Villages

Resim
, Lola, via Fubiz Media http://bit.ly/33yJVpU

Have alternative design education programs curbed interest in traditional design degrees?

Resim
The rise of the start-up, non-traditional approach to becoming a design professional has turned into a movement popular amongst self-starters, inquisitive young adults, and those wishing to make a career pivot. The "unconventional design education" has fostered an attitude intended to motivate individuals to pursue a career in design, but what does that mean exactly?  With "basic" design principles readily available thanks to e-learning platforms and social media sharing like Youtube and Instagram, should traditional design education systems be worried? Granted, this boom of alternative design learning won't completely eradicate traditional design programs, but is there something these platforms for personal enrichment can teach academic educators and institutions?  Image courtesy of Pexels. Meg Miller of Fast Company reported in October, "the majority of designers working today have a bachelor's degree (32%). Seventeen percent said they'v

Giving Shelter; A conversation with Sofia Borges & R. Scott Mitchell about architecture's potential to house us all

Resim
On this installment of Archinect Sessions , we’re sharing a conversation I had a couple of months ago with Sofia Borges and R. Scott Mitchell , the leaders of a design-build studio at USC that addressed one of the most pressing issues in Los Angeles today—homelessness.  The  MADWORKSHOP Homeless Studio set out with the goal of addressing this city-wide crisis by developing a real-world architectural response. The initial motivation for the studio came from the founders of MADWORKSHOP, Mary and David Martin, who reached out to USC School of Architecture with the hope that the students would be able to come up with some practical, creative and buildable solutions of homelessness in Los Angeles. You can learn more about the studio in this feature we have previously published. Since the completion of the studio they have produced a book documenting the process and results in "Give Me Shelter." The book is currently available for purchase from ORO , the publisher, or on Am

Vibrant Pictures of Tropical Plants Life

, Lola, via Fubiz Media http://bit.ly/2DngQmr

Redefining the Idea of Beauty with Photography

Resim
» , Lola, via Fubiz Media http://bit.ly/2L3QbPV

Banksy’s Former Agent Publishes Never Before Seen Works

, Lola, via Fubiz Media http://bit.ly/34rSSCt

California embraces VMT metrics to asses project environmental impacts

Resim
A transformational shift in perspective is taking shape in California, where the state's transportation agency, Caltrans, is in the midst of alterings its project impact analysis metrics by abandoning LOS in lieu of VMT .  Why is this important? Level of Service  (LOS), on the one hand, measures the impact of a project on traffic flow in a given area, prioritizing the movement of cars over other factors. Because LOS is optimized for automobile traffic, project impact mitigation measures often favor reducing automobile congestion so that traffic can keep flowing. Common LOS-led responses to a high-impact projects include highway widening and the addition of new driving lanes, for example, approaches that often actually work to make traffic worse through the phenomenon of " induced demand ."  Vehicle Miles Traveled  (VMT), on the other hand, measures the amount of travel generated for all vehicles by a given project. For projects that are measured against VMT, the goa

Robot "dog" can autonomously document construction progress

Construction software company HoloBuilder Inc. has announced a partnership with Boston Dynamics, maker of mobile robots, to develop SpotWalk, which the firm claims is a first-of-its-kind robotic document capture app for construction sites. ...the robot [can] walk around job sites autonomously and capture 360-degree images that record construction progress, thus creating digital, recordable data of the project over time.
