Friday drinks

Resim
Thank God that week is over! Time for a little after work drinkie or two. Put on some new lipstick and run a comb through your hair. You'll want to look your best because we are meeting up at Eden Locke in Edinburgh. Grzywinski+Pons took an 18th Century Georgian mansion and its 20th Century extension down to their bones and created this über stylish 72 room hotel, cafe and bar. Not that I'm suggesting we stay overnight. I don't know you that well ;) , midcenturyjo , via desire to inspire http://bit.ly/2ni5vPo

At age 79, architect Liu Thai Ker is leaving RSP to start his own firm

Resim
The new practice, Morrow, is named after the studio [Liu Thai Ker's] father, the pioneer artist Liu Kang, ran in the 1940s and 1950s. And though he joked that he was probably "the oldest man to start a company", Dr Liu stressed that he has no plans to retire soon and intends to work for as long as he can. Age is just a number! Dubbed the “architect of modern Singapore”, 79-year-old Liu Thai Ker is leaving his Director position at RSP Architects Planners & Engineers to start his own practice, Morrow, which will open December 1.  Leading 40 employees (who are also coming from RSP), Liu Thai Ker “hopes his firm can help other cities to produce better plans, and also ‘architecture design that is not a direct copy of Western magazines’”, The Straits Times writes. Book Review: 100 Buildings

Resim
100 Buildings  by Thom Mayne and Eui-Sung Yi, produced by The Now Institute Rizzoli, 2017 Flexicover, 262 pages When visiting the page for 100 Buildings  on Amazon today, the "What other items do customers buy after viewing this item?" section lists one book: mine . This isn't surprising, given that both have "100 Buildings" in their title and have been published in the last couple years. But like many architecture books that share some similarities, the differences are also interesting. 100 Years, 100 Buildings  features one building per year for the last 100 years (1916-2015), while 100 Buildings  limits itself to the 20th century. My book is a fairly subjective sampling of visitable buildings spanning a whole century, given the year-by-year format, while the "must know" buildings in the book by Thom Mayne and  Eui-Sung Yi are free from such constraints, as long as they were designed and/or completed somewhere between 1900 and 2000. New in - painted silk panel and books

Resim
There's nothing like coming home from work and finding goodies in the mailbox. Just before I left on vacation I received a few things that I didn't get a chance to photograph until last weekend. First up is a very special piece of art by Juliet Vonturi , a textile designer based in the Bay Area, California. My heart broke when Juliet mentioned she had to flee the area due to the forest fires :( Despite that setback she managed to send me a gorgeous panel of blue silk that she hand-painted - something she recently started offering.  I didn't have any frames on hand that were square so I improvised and taped it into my antique fireplace screen.  Juliet's atelier produces marble stone silks, linens, printed fabrics, as well as design coordinate pure botanicals made by expert artisans with sustainable colours. The marble prints are absolutely exquisite and I am totally in love with them. Some samples... I also received a couple more books from Vendome Press that
