BIG, along with Barcode Architects, have emerged as winners of the two-phase competition to develop a 46,000-square-meter [495,000-square-foot] mixed-use building situated in the rising IJburg neighborhood of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The building, nicknamed the Sluishuis, will act as a bridge between the new urban district and the harbor near Amsterdam’s historic center. Nestled between a dense urban environment and vast landscape, the Sluishuis is at a confluence of large-scale infrastructure and small-scale urban settlements. Responding to this context, the Sluishuis form rises up as it faces water, inviting a multiplicity of views and light conditions. On its city-facing elevations, it dissolves into a cascade of landscaped terraces that aids the transition from city to human scale. Intended to serve as both a local and tourist destination, the Sluishuis incorporates a promenade that wraps around the main structure and into the water. The resulting form is an archipelago that includes spots for houseboats, floating gardens and common spaces for Sluishuis residents.
