Plugin Architecture: People's Architecture Office's Housing Solution Evades Planning Approval


People’s Architecture Office (PAO) has completed an experimental installation at Vanke’s Shenzhen Headquarters that circumvents the issue of private home ownership amidst strict governmental regulations. Termed the Plugin Tower, the temporary structure overrides planning approval as it requires no underground foundation, making it easy for residents to deploy their structures wherever they decide to relocate. Inspired by Metabolist forms and composed as a multi-story prefabricated system, Plugin Tower consists of a steel space frame, a kit-of-parts approach which supports variable assembly, needs and conditions. Materially, Plugin Tower uses PAO’s panel system, which are modules that embed such elements as insulation and wiring into a single molded part. Designed to serve the needs of everyday Chinese citizens, the panels require little skill to assemble, merely requiring 2 set of hands to attach by integrated locks using a hex wrench.
