Rural Modernism: House T Delicately Contrasts Enclosure and Openness in the Austrian Countryside


Nestled among a tangle of vineyards in the Austrian countryside is House T, a home designed by Atelier Ulrike Tinnacher for a wine-making couple to retire on their vineyard. Situated on the site of a former wine press, the house is composed of two interlocking volumes that contrast each other in form and materiality. The private areas of the home are confined to the cast-concrete gabled structure, rendered in a softly speckled taupe color, whose thick walls are only occasionally interrupted by small windows. The public living areas are contained in a single-story rectangle, whose glazed walls create full transparency to the habitation within.
