Balancing Transparency: Natural Light is the Primary Building Material for Richard Meier's Hamburg Condominiums

Richard Meier & Partners have released the initial concept designs for the new Engel & Völkers Headquarters in Germany's port city of Hamburg. The winning design, which beat out proposals from the likes of Foster + Partners and Zaha Hadid Architects, envisions a 16-story tower of combined office space and condominiums from the real estate company's new operational base. Rendered in Richard Meier & Partners classic optic white, the project "is a study in balancing transparency and natural light with various degrees of privacy required for the residential and office interiors," say the architects. In treating natural light as "the main building material," the development offers floor-to-ceiling windows that endeavor to formulate a strong connection between the interior spaces and the surrounding port. The new Engel & Völkers Headquarters, which is slated for completion in 2018, is yet another project part of the large-scale development initiative for Hamburg's HafenCity district, located on the Elbe river islands.
