Venice Biennale Report: 5 Provocative Pavilions on the Domestic Frontline


With the 2016 Venice Biennale officially opening to the public today, Architizer embarked on a whirlwind tour of some of the key national pavilions to grace the city this year. The curators of several national pavilions interpret Alejandro Aravena’s ‘Reporting from the Frontline’ theme in relation their country’s domestic situation, either in terms of housing or other architectural challenges within their borders. The British Pavilion ‘Home Economics’ in the British pavilion tackles the vexatious issue of rising housing costs. The curators present five new models for domestic life as immersive 1:1 scale architectural models. Each is designed to match the timescale - hours, days, months, years or decades - that it would be appropriate for occupancy by individuals, groups of individuals sharing, couples or growing families. Challenging the adage that ‘an Englishman’s home is his castle’, the curators propose a new social norm in which domestic spaces are for shared living, not financial speculation.
