plan:b arquitectos' 'Orquideorama' is a Blossoming Geometric Pavilion for Medellín Botanical Garden


Medellín based studio plan:b arquitectos have created a modular wooden canopy for the Jardín Botánico de Medelliín (Medellín Botanical Garden). The steel and polycarbonate pavilion comprises interlocking geometric shapes, forming a honeycomb-like structure of delicate louvers made from harvested wood. The canopy intermingles with the surrounding trees, the structural "trunks" twisting organically as they rise and blossom outwards form a translucent covering. The canopy's geometry is echoed in the tessellated pattern of the pavement, which is dappled with sunlight. The pavilion provides space for many different functions in the garden, such as floral exhibitions, meditation sessions, and weddings amongst others. Besides, it works with the scale of the trees and some of their strategies: it concentrates all the networks in the trunk, mixes structure and organic force, and opens translucent foliage.
