Life After Oil: XTU Architects Envisions Abandoned Rigs as Futuristic, Green Housing

Award-winning architecture and design studio, XTU Architects, has presented a fantastical and not-so-futuristic collection of visualizations titled “X_lands”. The concept explores life after oil, reimagining the use of offshore drilling rigs.

Given the world’s desire to shift away from fossil fuels to more renewable and green energy sources, XTU Architects approached the question of what to do with all of the offshore platforms scattered across the globe. So, they turned towards reuse and revitalization.

“With their immense scale, oil rig structures have an interesting potential for adaptation,” Designboom reports. This project converts these industrial monoliths that are representative of environmental stress and harm into green, poetic, and habitable structures.

Each visualization features an abundance of lush greenery, living spaces, and sustainable and modern technology, such as wind turbines and drones. Some are more integrated with nature than others, while some appear as fantastical visions from the future, such as the rig composed of what looks like ETFE bubbles.

Overall, they humanize these otherwise mechanical and soulless structures. “Envisioned as a ‘sustainable path for tomorrow’, the project by XTU Architects aims to mark a change of paradigms,” according to Designboom.

Projects like “X_lands” provide an imaginative glimpse of how undesirable and obsolete spaces can be reinterpreted and recycled for better uses. The project offers an intriguing look into how far adaptive reuse strategies could be pushed. Until the oil runs dry, though, this outlandish concept will remain just that.
