The Beauty in the Wreckage: A Brazilian Office Is Designed to Highlight the Process of Demolition


Tasked with crafting a new office space and identity for a well-known Brazilian design studio, Casa REX, FGMF Arquitetos aspired to create an environment that aligned with the unconventional and unique work of its clients. Located in São Paulo, the firm worked with an old residence from the early 20th century in dire need of a restoration. Hoping to expose the brick foundations of the original architecture, FGMF embarked on an extensive demolition project. Naming its approach a process of “architectural archaeology,” the design team aimed to highlight the action of demolition by exposing the raw edges of the original walls and staircase while lining the floors of the reception area with a layer of gravel. Due to budgetary constraints, the team opted for a gabion facade, utilizing red sandstone and gravel to create a checkered pattern on the exterior. Inside the double-height studio space, a sculptural wall and staircase are fitted with a massing of cast concrete, introducing another element of texture into the white room.
