The nine Harvard GSD Loeb Fellows for 2019


Harvard GSD recently announced the Loeb Fellowship Class of 2019. From architects to journalists to public policy makers, the fellowship invites a group of outstanding mid-career practitioners for a year of independent study at the school. 

The latest group of Loeb Fellows were selected for their focus on creating positive social change and “supporting a more equitable collective future” through their work. Read on for more about the 2019 Fellows:

Stephen Burks - Principal, Stephen Burks Man Made | New York & Barcelona 

Stephen Burks believes in a pluralistic vision of design inclusive of all cultural perspectives. For his efforts with artisan groups around the world, he has been called a design activist. Going beyond borders, oceans, and thinking of the continents as a continuous entity comes from this vision. Fifty years later, we face the existential threat of ecological disaster, and maybe revisiting the whole earth project seems like a way of recapturing that drive. This proposal looks at a network of towers that span across the oceans connecting the planet in a matrix that provides energy cleans the oceans and gives new chances for life to thrive. Fusion, Solar, and Hydro-power are used in this matrix with all of these being in high abundance in the ocean.
