Our cabin is a RAL Kit Home. We love that it appears to be a little domed hut from the outside but inside it’s like a mini cathedral, the intersecting arches flooded with natural light. Designer builder Reiny Loeliger (who sadly passed away in 2017), was inspired by the minimal, lightweight bark shelters constructed by Aboriginal people. It’s a bushfire resistant kit home — essential for this region of Australia. The kit consists of prefabricated structural panels which are bolted together to form a series of segmented and intersecting arches to make a house of varying and infinitely expandable size.
Inside the frames are clad with renewable plantation pine plywood which forms the floor and the curved walls/ceilings. Our cabin sits on a beautiful piece of Australian bush in the Grampians region of Victoria. The Grampians is a National Park known for its stunning series of sandstone mountain ranges and its wealth of indigenous rock art sites. Our land features huge and ancient redgum trees, a gorgeous natural dam, and plenty of native wildlife (kangaroos, echidnas, cockatoos and more). We stay here on weekends and holidays, but are planning to move here full time while our children are young and can make the most of country life.
