Zaha Hadid Architects dominates ABB LEAF Awards; David Chipperfield honored for Lifetime Achievement


It was quite the night for Zaha Hadid Architects when this year's ABB LEAF Awards were presented to winning architectural projects across 14 categories during a recent gala dinner in Frankfurt, Germany. The London-based firm of the late Dame Hadid won with international projects in three categories (Refurbishment, Best Facade Design & Engineering, and Best Achievement in Environmental Performance) and also claimed the title of Overall Winner with its dramatic Port House refurbishment in Antwerp, Belgium. 

The Lifetime Achievement of the Year went to David Chipperfield. 

The jury this year comprised architects and academics from SOM, Bjarke Ingels Group, Aedas, Crab Studio, Henning Larsen, Bartlett School of Architecture, Graft among others.

Going beyond borders, oceans, and thinking of the continents as a continuous entity comes from this vision. Fifty years later, we face the existential threat of ecological disaster, and maybe revisiting the whole earth project seems like a way of recapturing that drive. This proposal looks at a network of towers that span across the oceans connecting the planet in a matrix that provides energy cleans the oceans and gives new chances for life to thrive.
