Bustler's Top 10 Competitions of 2018


From exploring what domestic architecture will look like in the future, to creating an iconic ‘public library’ for the digital age, this year's most popular competitions asked designers to think about how architecture will evolve to address various challenges in the 21st century. Some have been recurring favorites—such as eVolo's annual Skyscraper Competition and Laka's ever-popular “Architecture that Reacts”—while others sought time-sensitive briefs and thematically relevant ideas on topics ranging from architectural fairy tales and coffee kiosks to affordable housing in London and a Museum of Language.

Out of the hundreds of design competitions that happened over the last 12 months, we compiled a list of the Top 10 Competitions of 2018. Have a look.

Editors’ Choice 2020 Skyscraper Competition Ruwan Fernando Australia Ever since the Apollo mission showed us the first images of our ‘pale blue dot’ from space, the idea of the world as a ‘whole’ has captured the people’s imagination. Going beyond borders, oceans, and thinking of the continents as a continuous entity comes from this vision. Fifty years later, we face the existential threat of ecological disaster, and maybe revisiting the whole earth project seems like a way of recapturing that drive. This proposal looks at a network of towers that span across the oceans connecting the planet in a matrix that provides energy cleans the oceans and gives new chances for life to thrive. Fusion, Solar, and Hydro-power are used in this matrix with all of these being in high abundance in the ocean.
