The winning European projects of the “Best Architects 20” competition


Established in 2006, the yearly "Best Architects" competition invites architects across Europe to submit the best of their work, and celebrates outstanding, high-quality architectural designs. Out of 326 projects for the "best 20 architects” edition, the jury awarded over 70 projects. Another 11 were further distinguished with a “best architects gold” award.

“It was impressive to see the high quality of projects in all areas, regardless of the size or the prestige of the relevant assignment. Attention to detail, a consistent implementation of the architectural concept and a sensitive approach to the surroundings are the hallmarks of many of these works. The number of ‘low cost’ projects that managed to achieve extraordinary things with a minimal budget was also striking,” said Tobias Schwarzer, Best Architects Award organizer, in a statement.

Going beyond borders, oceans, and thinking of the continents as a continuous entity comes from this vision. Fifty years later, we face the existential threat of ecological disaster, and maybe revisiting the whole earth project seems like a way of recapturing that drive. This proposal looks at a network of towers that span across the oceans connecting the planet in a matrix that provides energy cleans the oceans and gives new chances for life to thrive.
