Dozens of buildings at UCLA, UC Berkeley pose "severe" earthquake risks

Resim
Although no campus buildings were deemed to be in the worst category, “dangerous,” six at UC Berkeley and three at UCLA were found to have a “severe” risk to life. The remaining 62 at UC Berkeley and 15 at UCLA were said to have a “serious” risk to life, according to the first reports released this week in response to a UC Board of Regents 2017 directive calling on every campus to undertake a seismic risk assessment. The list includes some of both campus's most historic and important buildings, including Berkeley's architecture building, Wurster Hall, and UCLA's Powell Library. A potential 2020 ballot measure and a recently-proposed California State Senate bill could provide funding to make necessary retrofits. Antonio Pacheco via Archinect - News http://bit.ly/30QpTq8

Pamela Tan’s New Colorful Strings Installation

Resim
, Lola, via Fubiz Media http://bit.ly/2ZtMn3N

City of Seattle tackles housing affordability, workforce automation, seismic upgrades with new "resilience roadmap"

Resim
We must continue to prepare for acute shocks— events that could threaten our City’s ability to function, such as natural disasters. We must also address chronic stresses—challenges that weaken our natural, built, or human resources, such as income inequality and chronic homelessness. Stresses often exacerbate the effects of shocks when they occur, particularly for vulnerable populations. The plan comes as Seattle, the fastest-growing city in the country, and the larger Puget Sound metropolitan region around it, prepare to nearly double in population by 2050 .  Antonio Pacheco via Archinect - News http://bit.ly/2ZroV77

Handbook of Tyranny Theo Deutinger Lars Müller Publishers, February 2018 Flexicover | 8-1/4 x 11-3/4 inches | 164 pages | 987 illustrations | English | ISBN: 978-3037785348 | $30.00 Publisher Description : Handbook of Tyranny portrays the routine cruelties of the twenty-first century through a series of detailed non-fictional graphic illustrations. None of these cruelties represent extraordinary violence—they reflect day-to-day implementation of laws and regulations around the globe. Every page of the book questions our current world of walls and fences, police tactics and prison cells, crowd control and refugee camps. The level of detail depicted in the illustrations of the book mirror the repressive efforts taken by authorities around the globe. The twenty-first century shows a general striving for an ever more regulated a...
